What the IAE code is
The IAE (Tax on Economic Activities) classifies every activity you can invoice for. When you register, you choose the code that best describes what you do: it's what you declare to the Spanish Tax Agency on form 036.
Codes are grouped into three sections, and it's worth not mixing them up: Section 1 covers business activities — separating product sales (retail), services and manufacturing; Section 2 covers professional activities (a lawyer, a designer, a programmer…); and Section 3 covers artistic activities.
Choosing well matters: the code determines how you're taxed, whether you have to charge VAT and which obligations apply to you. That's why this tool is only a guide — it gives you an idea — and you should confirm the final code before you register.
Estimates only. This tool gives you an estimate based on the details you enter, but every situation is different and there may be factors it doesn't account for. It isn't a substitute for professional advice.
